Since the beginning MCMI has depended on the support and counsel of an energetic and dedicated board of directors.  As the organization moves forward and expands its reach in science, education and in the communities we serve, the work of the board remains as essential as ever.

Joseph Atkins, Ph.D
Dr. Joseph Atkins is currently serving as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Psychology and the Coordinator of Multicultural Student Programs and Support at Colby College, where he has worked for 4 years. After working nearly 10 years for IBM, Joe decided to go back to school.

​

He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Vassar College, where he held a dual major in Computer Science and Cognitive Science.  He then went on to get his PhD in Brain and Cognitive Sciences from the University of Rochester.  His areas of expertise are: visual learning, perceptual learning, cognitive science, virtual reality, sensory integration, decision making with uncertainty, visual deficits due to brain damage, artificial intelligence.

Paul Berkner, DO, Chair

Dr. Paul Berkner is currently serving as the Medical Director of Student Health Services at the University of New England in Biddeford, ME. Formerly, he practiced with Colby College and Middlebury Pediatric Medicine. He received his D.O. from the University of New England, College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency at Morristown Memorial Hospital. Dr. Berkner specializes in pediatrics.

Dr. Bryant is a board certified clinical neuropsychologist with specialization in concussion management, practicing at Neuropsychology & Concussion Management Associates in Rockport, Maine. She has been involved with MCMI since early in the process and currently serves on the board as Secretary.

Dan Davies, ATC
A Maine-licensed, NATABOC Certified Athletic Trainer and NSCA strength and conditioning specialist. Davies graduated from Keene State College with a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training in 1993. He was awarded a Master’s degree in Education / Administration and Supervision from the University of Hartford in 2000. From 1994 to 2003 he was an assistant athletic trainer and head athletic trainer for the University of Hartford. Davies came to Bowdoin College in 2003 as the head athletic trainer. Davies is a Sports Medicine professional with extensive experience in Cyriax and Mulligan orthopedic mobilization and evaluation techniques. He has worked in multiple settings throughout his career, including high schools, a physical therapy clinic and Division I and III NCAA institutions.

Jill Farwell, OTR/L, Emeritus
Jill is a Maine and New Hampshire licensed pediatric occupational therapist. She graduated from University of New Hampshire in 1995 with a Bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy. Jill has worked at York Hospital since 1996 and been an integral part of the development of the outpatient pediatric therapy program. Jill works with York Hospital’s child and family centered team of physical, occupational and speech/ language pathologists with children with a variety of neurological, orthopedic and developmental conditions.

William M. Heinz, MD
Dr. Heinz is a medical orthopedist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of sports related concussions and musculoskeletal injuries.  He received his undergraduate degree from Purdue University and then his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine.  He completed a residency in Internal Medicine, and a fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine, where he sub-specialized in shoulder injuries.  He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine.  He is an adjuvant professor at the University of New England in the Department of Physical Therapy, and is a co-founder of the Maine Concussion Management Initiative.  He is the current Chair of the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee for the National Federation of State High School Associations, and also serves on the Maine Principals’ Association Sports Medicine Committee.  He is the team physician for the Portland Sea Dogs, the sports medicine consultant for Gould Academy, and the company physician for the Portland Ballet.

Rebekah Mannix MD, MPH is an emergency medicine physician at Boston Children’s Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School.  Dr. Mannix is the co-Director of the Brain Injury Center at Boston

 

Debra Nichols, CPNP
Deb is a board certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner who is the health care provider and coordinator of the School-Based Health Centers in Oxford Hills.  Deb is a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Nurse Corps where she developed her interest in concussions as an Emergency Room and Orthopedic nurse.  Deb received her undergraduate degree from St. Anselm’s College, Manchester, NH; her graduate degree in Child Health from Emory University in Atlanta, GA; and her post-master’s pediatric nurse practitioner certificate from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD.  Deb brings over 20 years of military nursing and leadership experience as well as 18 years’ experience as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.   Over the years, she has precepted nursing students, nurse practitioner students, medical students, and interns from programs around the United States.  Deb has taught many clinical courses and has received several awards for her clinical acumen and expertise.  Deb has also provided education to many community groups, athletic teams, and parents of athletes in the recognition and management of concussions.  As the nurse practitioner in the Oxford Hills School-Based Health Centers, Deb is passionate about the diagnosis and management of concussions and sports injuries in Maine’s youth.  She provides direct patient care to youths with concussions and collaborates with school nurses, the athletic trainer, the athletic director, coaches, teachers, and parents in the management of youth concussions, guiding the recovery process, and their return to both academics and sports.

John Ryan, EdD, ATC
John Ryan, EdD, ATC is the Head Athletic Trainer and coordinator of athletic medical services at South Portland High School. John is a 1989 graduate of the University of Maine at Orono with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education/Athletic Training, as well as a Master’s degree in Education (University of Maine, 1995), a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Leadership (University of Maine, 2006), and he holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Athletic Administration at Concordia University-Chicago (May 2012). He is a National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification Certified Athletic Trainer and is licensed to practice as an Athletic Trainer in the state of Maine. John previously spent 21 years as the Head Athletic Trainer at Bangor High School. John has been a member of the MCMI Board since its inception.

Martin E. Ryan, CMAA
Martin E. Ryan, CMAA, of Wells, currently serves as the Executive Director of the Maine Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.  Ryan has been an Athletic Administrator for the past 35 years and in addition to managing the state association, served as president of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association and was inducted into the NIAAA Hall of Fame in 2011.  Ryan serves as a liaison to the Maine Principals Association Interscholastic Management Committee, the MPA Wrestling Committee, is a member of the national faculty for instruction for the NIAAA Leadership Training Program and currently serves as the President of the Maine Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. 

 

Jan Salis
is currently the Chair of MCMI’s Membership and Education Committees. Her passion for proper concussion management from her work in the clinical setting brought her to MCMI. Coming from the Midwest, Jan has a BS in Education from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and a MS in physical education/athletic training from Indiana State University. After graduate school, she worked for a year at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, then came to Maine as the Assistant Athletic Trainer at Bates College. After 4 years at Bates, Jan returned to school and received a BS in Physical Therapy from the University of New England. Since, Jan has worked in private practice and then as the Director of Physical Rehabilitation at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway, Maine. During this time, Jan continued with clinical practice in physical therapy and athletic training outreach to local high schools

Peter Sedgwick, MD
Dr. Sedgwick practices in Lewiston at Central Maine Sports Medicine.  He is a graduate of Williams College and University of Massachusetts Medical School.  He completed his residency training and Fellowship in Sports Medicine at Maine Medical Center in Portland, and is currently the co-team physician of Bates College and the medical director of the Dempsey Challenge for Hope and Healing.  His office helps with concussion management and sports injuries for numerous high schools and recreational athletes.

Tim Weston, ATC
Tim Weston is currently entering his sixth year as the Head Athletic Trainer at Colby College in Waterville Maine. He has been a member of the Colby Sports Medicine staff since 1992, serving as the assistant athletic trainer at Colby for 16 years before assuming his current position in 2008.

​

He is currently on the Quality/Risk management committee for the Health Services Department at Colby College and on the Board of Directors for the Maine Concussion Management Initiative. He also currently serves on the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Medical Aspects committee. In addition to his administrative duties as Head Athletic Trainer, he is responsible for the medical coverage of the women’s soccer, men’s ice hockey, baseball and crew teams

Weston served the Maine Athletic Trainers Association (MATA) as Treasurer, Vice President and President from (1993-2000). He served as the NATA District One Secretary from (2004-2012), Chairperson of the NATA District Secretaries/Treasurers committee from (2010-2012) and the on the EATA Executive Board as a District One Officer from 2004-2012. He also served NATAPAC Board of Directors representing District One from (2010-2013).  He is incoming Director for District One to the NATA Board of Directors.

Haley Driscoll, BA

Haley joined MCMI in July of 2020 as the Project Manager and assists in serving Maine schools and student athletes as an advocate and resource for concussion management. Haley received her BA from Colby College in 2018 with a major in Psychology and a minor in Statistics. From 2018 to 2020, she worked at Massachusetts General Hospital as a Regulatory Coordinator in the Psychiatry Department.
